Development and Communications Associate
Exempt Part-Time (about 20 hours per week)
Position Summary
The Development and Communications Associate will be a part of an exciting and growing organization. The primary focus of this position is organizing events in order to generate visibility and revenue, researching grant opportunities and writing grant proposals, and assisting in coordinating Adhikaar’s external communications, including website maintenance and electronic communications. The Development and Communications Associate reports to the Executive Director, and will partner closely with the staff, board, and volunteers to increase Adhikaar’s profile within New York and beyond.
Essential Duties
Development & Communications
§ Identify foundation and corporate grant opportunities and write grant proposals.
§ Write monthly reports, and regular updates.
§ Organize annual award ceremony and fundraiser in July.
§ Provide staff support to volunteers and fundraising committees.
§ Develop timelines and organize small-scale special events around New York City.
§ Maintain prospect and donor databases, and produce reports as necessary.
§ Assist with Adhikaar’s external communications, including website content, e-communications, direct mail solicitations, newsletters, speeches/public presentations, marketing materials and opinion editorials and press releases.
§ Maintain Adhikaar identity and presence on selected social networks.
§ Assist in the writing and production of brochures and other marketing pieces, liaising with graphic designers and printers.
General
§ Support program staff, interns, and volunteers in smooth functioning of the organization
§ Participate in staff and team meetings.
§ Some evening and weekend work required.
Qualifications
Skills
§ 2 years fundraising, communications, or other relevant experience.
§ Excellent organizational, listening, oral and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to relate to and communicate with diverse communities.
§ Strong skills in copy-editing for fundraising.
§ Proficiency with MS Office Suite (especially Word and Excel), Internet communication and web navigation and search.
§ Proficiency in Drupal (website content management system) and web 2.0 tools, including social networking.
§ Strong computer skills; experience in troubleshooting hardware and software problems such as phone systems, remote server access, and MS Office applications.

§ Must be able to work independently and multi-task with high degree of project and time-management capacity.
§ Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality at all times.

§ Bilingual (particularly in Nepali or Tibetan)/bicultural skills highly desirable.
§ Demonstrated ability to achieve high performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
§ Strong interpersonal skills and ability to create positive, long-term working relationships by demonstrating a commitment to team work and customer service, tact, confidentiality, dependability, diplomacy and flexibility.
§ Willingness and ability to travel to meetings and other events.
§ Proven ability to work in a small and friendly office environment where each staff person assumes multiple responsibilities while striving to achieve shared goals.
§ Positive approach, can-do attitude and sense of humor.

We are also hiring for the following internship positions.
Program Intern
Provide support to workers’ rights program, including weekly English classes. The intern will have the option to teach ESL classes, if interested.
Provide assistance with program development including research and writing components.
Serve as a note-taker at workshops and other events and write regular reports and program updates.
Other duties, assigned as needed.
Development and Communications Intern
Provide assistance to the Development and Communications Associate with communications including website development, media outreach, press kits, and community outreach;
Provide assistance with marketing through social networking sites, conference attendance, and online presence;
Assist the Executive Director with the end of the year report writing (June) and grant writing
Provide support to the Annual Fundraiser Planning Committee;
Other duties, assigned as needed.
Required/Preferred Skills
1. Strong writing and computer skills, particularly in word processing and database programs;
2. Demonstrated interest in working in the area of human rights and social justice and/or with Nepali communities;
3. Good organizational skills, able to handle many responsibilities concurrently, and able to work under pressure with limited resources.
4. Ability to work independently as well as within a team.
5. Bilingual/bicultural skills highly desirable. Knowledge of Nepali/Tibetan preferred, but not required.
