Adhikaar organized its first Women's Health Fair on March 9, 2008. The event was held at the Adhikaar office in Woodside, Queens from 12-3.30pm. The Health Fair comprised of blood screening, clinical breast exam, breast health consultation, and discussion about health issues in the community. The participants who needed follow-up were referred to the South Asian Outreach Project at the Elmhurst Hospital. All the women over the age of 40 were encouraged to register for mammogram and pap test to be organized at a later time. The health fair was made possible by the South Asian Health Initiative (SAHI) and its group of NYU doctors and medical students, Adhikaar team, and Dr. Rekha Hamal.
The participants also learned about Adhikaar’s other programs, and some of the participants signed up for English classes.
